परिचय ( Introduction )

गणित की कक्षा में जाने के क्रम में जब हम कक्षा – पूर्व तैयारी करते हैं तो अनेक अनुभवों यथा बच्चों को अवधारणा पर कैसे लायेंगे , उनसे विषयवस्तु से जुड़ी कौन – सी गतिविधियाँ करायेंगे , उनके मध्य कैसी सामग्री प्रदर्शित करेंगे , बच्चों की सक्रिय सहभागिता हेतु क्या करेंगे , नयी अवधारणा को उनके बीच कैसे प्रस्तुत और स्पष्ट करेंगे , बच्चों ने सीखा या नहीं इसकी जाँच कैसे करेंगे आदि को ध्यान में रखते हैं । शिक्षण अधिगम प्रक्रिया की जो संरचना हमारे द्वारा की जाती है उसमें उपरोक्त अनुभवों को भी एक क्रमबद्ध ढंग से प्रस्तुत किया जाता है ।

अधिगम प्रक्रिया का यह क्रमबद्ध प्रस्तुतीकरण ही शिक्षण विधि कहलाती है । हमारे पढ़ाने का तरीका और पाठ को कक्षा में प्रस्तुत करने का तरीका कैसा हो ? यहाँ न केवल हमारे शिक्षण कौशल वरन् पाठ्यवस्तु की प्रकृति , बच्चों के सीखने के तरीके , कक्षा में उपलब्ध संसाधनों तथा विषयवस्तु की प्रकृति पर भी निर्भर करता है एवं इसको ध्यान में रखते हुए ही हम अपनी शिक्षण विधि तय करते हैं । यही कारण है कि गणित विषय में अलग – अलग अवधारणाओं को स्पष्ट करने हेतु अलग – अलग विधियों को प्रयुक्त किया जाता

गणित शिक्षण का रचनावादी दृष्टिकोण ( Constructivist Approach to Teaching Mathematics )

गणित शिक्षण की बहुत सारी ऐसी विधियाँ मौजूद हैं जो हमें गणित विषय की प्रकृति में अमूर्तता से मूर्तता की ओर ले जाती हैं । बस देर है तो उन विधियों पद्धतियों एवं तरीकों तक पहुँचने की , उन्हें आत्मसात् करने की और उन पर समझ बनाने की । गणित को रटने के बजाय रचनावादी नजरिये से देखने – समझने की जरूरत महसूस होती दिखाई पड़ती है ।

1920 के लगभग पियाजे ने यह समझ बनाई कि बच्चों द्वारा की गई गलतियाँ हमें बताती हैं कि वे कैसे सोचते हैं तथा वे गलतियाँ उनको गणितीय सोच में झाँकने का एक उम्दा झरोखा है । सीखने का यह नजरिया जो सीखनेवाले को सीखने की प्रक्रिया में एक सक्रियकर्ता मानता है , रचनावादी मॉडल कहलाता है । इसमें बच्चे अपने आसपास की दुनिया एवं लोगों के साथ सम्पर्क बनाकर अपनी समझ का निर्माण करते हैं ।

इसमें बच्चे अनेक पहलुओं पर सोचने को प्रेरित होते हैं । कुछ – न – कुछ सीखना जारी रहता है , वह व्यर्थ नहीं जाता है , वह चाहे प्रमेय हो या पैटर्न की पड़ताल करना है । सीखने एवं सिखाने की प्रक्रिया केवल पाठ्यपुस्तक पर निर्भर न रहकर बच्चों को खुद करने के मौके देने चाहिए ताकि वे अपने ज्ञान का निर्माण स्वयं कर सकें , पाठ्यपुस्तक तो सिर्फ माध्यम है ।

मूल्यांकन की ऐसी विधियों को विकसित करना जो सीखने को बढ़ावा दें तथा इनसे पाठ्यक्रम विकास व नियोजन के लिए फीडबैक प्राप्त हो । शिक्षक की भूमिका ज्ञाता के लिए नहीं अपितु मार्गदर्शक की होती है । खोजबीन की भावना को प्रोत्साहित किया जाता है । गणित में पैटर्न खोजना एवं व्यापकीकरण को प्रोत्साहित करने पर बल दिया जाता है । ये भी आकलन करना कि क्या , कितना और कैसे सीखा जा रहा है ?

रचनावादी दृष्टिकोण से तात्पर्य है कि विद्यार्थियों की मानसिक चिन्तन शक्ति का प्रयोग करके गणित पा मनोरंजक और रचनात्मक तरीके से कार्य करके गणित शिक्षण की समस्याओं का समाधान करती है । यदि शिक्षक गणितीय कार्यों में छोटे – छोटे बदलाव करते हैं तो विद्यार्थी और अधिक प्रभावी ढंग से सीख पाएँगे । जब विद्यार्थियों को अधिक चयन करने और निर्णय लेने की छूट दी जाती है , तो वे गणित का आनन्द ले सकते हैं । और गणित के अपने शिक्षण से सशक्त अनुभव कर सकते हैं ।

गणित सिखाने का एक संभावित क्रम : अ – भा – चि – प्र ( Possible Sequance to Teach Mathematics )

क्या इस शीर्षक ने आपको चक्कर में डाल दिया ? इसी प्रकार बच्चे भी ऐसे नये प्रतीकों को समझ नहीं पाते जो पूरी तरह समझाए बिना उन पर थोप दिए जाते हैं । बच्चों में गणित की समझ बनाने हेतु आपको उन्हें सावधानी से बनाए गए क्रम में सीखने के अनुभव देने होंगे । कुछ भी और सीखने की तरह ही गणित सीखना भी एक लगातार प्रक्रिया है । बच्चों को ठोस अनुभवों का क्रम होना चाहिए

( अ ) ठोस वस्तुओं के साथ अनुभव ( जैसे – कंकड़ , लकड़ियाँ या अन्य कोई भी आसानी से मिलने वाली चीजें ) ;

( भा ) बोलकर अनुभवों के बारे में बताना , यानी कि भाषा का प्रयोग ( जैसे – शब्द / कहानी सवालों के उपयोग से , खेलों से )

( चि ) अनुभव को चित्रों द्वारा दिखाना ( जैसे , मात्रा को चित्रों द्वारा दिखाना ) ;

( प्र ) अनुभव को लिखित प्रतीकों द्वारा व्यापकीकरण ( जैसे , संख्यांक ) ।

चलिये , यह मानकर कि कोई बच्चा पूर्ण संख्याओं से परिचित है , उसकी ऋणात्मक संख्याओं की अवधारणा सीखने के संदर्भ में इस क्रम को देखें । यहाँ चीजों का प्रयोग कर ठोस के साथ अनुभव करवाने के संदर्भ को सोचना होगा । यहाँ प्राकृत संख्या की तरह चीजें नहीं दे कर गिनवा सकते । यहाँ हमें एक ऐसा उदाहरण चुनना होगा जिसमें हम भूतल को शून्य मानें । ऊपर जाने वाली सीढ़ियाँ धनात्मक संख्या हैं तथा नीचे तहखाने में जाने वाली शून्य से धीरे धीरे कम होती जाती हैं । बच्चों को सीढ़ियों पर ऊपर – नीचे जाने का अभ्यास करवा सकते हैं ।

इसी प्रकार किसी गढ्ढे की गहराई के लिए ऋणात्मक संख्या के उपयोग से बच्चे देख सकते हैं कि गहइराई बढ़ने का अर्थ है ज्यादा ऋणात्मक संख्या होगी ।

( अ ) बार – बार तहखाने में जाने कि अथवा पहली मंजिल पर जाने को कह कर के तथा उनसे संख्या धनात्मक होगी या ऋणात्मक पूछ कर व उन्हें ऐसे कथन गढ़ने का कहकर उनसे धनात्मक व ऋणात्मक संख्या को भाषा के रूप में उपयोग करवा सकते हैं ।

( चि ) ऐसे चित्र बना कर बच्चों को चित्र पर अलग – अलग संख्या दिखाने को कह सकते हैं । वे चित्र लेकर आपस में खेल सकते हैं । ऋणात्मक संख्या के उदाहरण में वह प्रतीक का परिचय भी प्राप्त कर लेते हैं ।

( प्र ) इसके बाद ठोस वस्तुओं व चित्र के बिना ऋणात्मक संख्याओं को प्रतीकों के रूप में अभ्यास करते हैं ।

इस क्रम में बच्चे ठोस अनुभव को महसूस करके व उसके साथ कार्य करके धीरे – धीरे अमूर्तता की ओर बढ़ते हैं एवं प्रतीकों के उपयोग करने तक उससे पूरी तरह सक्षम हो जाते हैं ।

( अ ) वे अपनी रोटी / सैंडविच , या रंगीन कागज का एक टुकड़ा , या अन्य कोई भी ऐसी चीजों को आधे – आधे में बाँटते हैं । बाद में वे , मान लीजिये , 6 चीजों को दो समूहों में बाँटते हैं ।

( भा ) वे शब्द ‘ आधे ‘ को मात्रा से जोड़ने लगते हैं । आप ऐसे खेल बना सकते हैं , जिससे वह अलग – अलग भिन्न संख्याओं के नामों से परिचित हो पाए ।

( चि ) आप चित्र में दिखाए गए तरीके से उसे कई चित्र दिखा सकते हैं । प्राइमरी स्कूल में बच्चे मूर्त – संक्रियात्मक अवस्था में होते हैं । सीखने वालों को अगली अवस्था तक बढ़ने में सहायता देने के लिए आपको ठोस व औपचारिक के बीच की कड़ियों पर जोर देना होगा । अ भा चि प्र इसी तरह का एक क्रम है ।

औपचारिक गणित को ठोस अनुभवों से जोड़ने की आवश्यकता ( Need to Link Format Mathematics to Concrete Experiences )

आपको शायद ऐसा लगे कि एक बार यदि बच्ची कोई विशेष अमूर्त अवधारणा या प्रक्रिया समझ गयी है जो उसके बाद उसे अन्य अवधारणाएँ या प्रक्रियाएँ समझने हेतु ठोस अनुभवों की जरूरत नहीं है । किन्तु ऐसा नहीं है । औपचारिक गणित या मन में हिसाब अच्छी तरह कर पाने के बावजूद भी बच्चों को अवधारणाओं संक्रियाओं , सवालों , आदि को समझने के लिए वास्तविक चीजों एवं अनुभवों की जरूरत पड़ सकती है ।

उनके विकास का यह पेंचदार स्वरूप गणित सीखने की विशेषता है । उदाहरण हेतु , जब दो अंकों वाली संख्याएँ सिखायी जाती हैं उससे पहले बच्चों को ‘ स्थानीय मान ‘ समझने की जरूरत होती है । इसके लिए उन्हें समूह बनाने के ढेर सारे ठोस अनुभवों से गुजरने की जरूरत होगी । इससे उन्हें धीरे – धीरे ‘ दहाई ‘ एवं ‘ इकाई ‘ समझने में मदद मिलेगी ।

इसके बाद वे छोटी संख्याओं के औपचारिक गुणा और भाग करने के लिए तैयार हो जाएंगे तथा फिर उनमें बड़ी संख्याओं के संदर्भ में स्थानीय मान ‘ की समझ विकसित करने के लिए फिर कई प्रकार की सीखने की ठोस अनुभवों से गुजरने की जरूरत होगी ।

इस तरह से , पहले छोटी संख्याओं एवं फिर बड़ी संख्याओं के संदर्भ में काम करने से बच्चों को अवधारणा की बेहतर समझ बनाने का मौका मिलता है ।

उदाहरण हेतु , मान लीजिए एक बच्ची एक नई अवधारणा , जोड़ में क्रमविनिमयता , को समझने की कोशिश कर रही है । शुरू में , इतना काफी है कि वह इस गुण को छोटी संख्याओं से , जिनसे वह पहले परिचित हैं , के लिए ही समझ ले । अभी वह बड़ी संख्याओं से , जिनसे वह शायद उतनी परिचित न हो , क्यों जूझे ? प्रश्न 2 में सीखने वाले की सहायता करने का एक तरीका है ऐसे इबारती सवालों का इस्तेमाल करना जिनका उसकी दुनिया से ताल्लुक हो ।

उदाहरण के लिये , यदि आप एक पूर्वस्कूली बच्चे को ‘ दो ‘ का अर्थ सिखाने की कोशिश कर रहे हैं , तो एक अच्छा तरीका होगा कि आप उसे ‘ मुझे दो पेन्सिलें दो ‘ जैसे अनेक सवाल दें । इस प्रकार के सवालों को हल करते हुए बच्ची अभ्यास करती है व धीरे – धीरे ‘ दो ‘ का अर्थ पूरी तरह से समझ लेती है । इसी तरह , “ तुम्हारे पास पाँच पेन्सिलें थीं , यदि मैंने तुम्हें बारह और दी तो तुम्हारे पास कुल मिलाकर कितनी पेन्सिलें हो जाएंगी ? ” की तरह के इबारती सवाल करने से बच्चे जोड़ की अवधारणा बनाते परन्तु , इबारती सवाल आम तौर पर कक्षा । के अंत में कराए जाते हैं । यह शायद इसलिए है क्योंकि हममें से कई लोगों की यह गलत धारणा है कि इबारती सवाल ऐल्गोरिदमों का अभ्यास कराने का एक ढंग है । बड़ों की तार्किक सोच तय करती है कि औपचारिक प्रतीकों को पहले सिखाना चाहिए । क्या आप इससे सहमत हैं ?

वैसे तो कोई भी पाठ्य पुस्तक ऐसे किसी एक स्तर से शुरू नहीं हो सकती जो हरेक बच्चे हेतु सही हो । यदि शिक्षक चाहते हैं कि वे गणितीय सोच व क्षमताओं की पक्की नींव बनाएं , तो यह महत्त्वपूर्ण है कि पूर्वस्कूली व प्राईमरी स्कूल के बच्चों के लिए वे पाठ्य पुस्तक के अतिरिक्त अन्य शिक्षण सामग्री का भी इस्तेमाल करें ।

वास्तव में , अपने आप में गतिविधियों पर आधारित एक पाठ्यक्रम दे देना ही काफी नहीं है । बेहत्तर यह होगा कि उसके साथ – साथ पाठ्य पुस्तक की जगह एक कार्यपुस्तक का इस्तेमाल किया जाए , खास तौर से छोटे बच्चों हेतु । एक बच्चे को किसी भी अवधारणा को समझने के लिए उसे ठोस अनुभवों से शुरू करके अमूर्त स्तर तक , पहुँचने के लिए सीखने के अनुभव एक क्रम में देने चाहिये । मोटे तौर पर यही क्रम रख कर , इसमें थोड़ी बहुत तब्दीलियों की जा सकती हैं एवं क्रम के हर चरण में आपको यह जानना जरूरी है कि बच्ची को कितना समझ में आया है ।

गणित सिखाने के बारे में कुछ और तथ्य ( Some more facts about Learning Mathematics )

खेल – खेल में सीखना ( Learning during Play )

बच्चे गणित की अनेक बुनियादी अवधारणाएँ खेलों से सीख सकते हैं । उन्हें जाने पहचाने संदर्भो में खेलने में मजा आता है । अनेक खेलों में , अपने आप ही , मजे – मजे में , बहुत सारी गणितीय गतिविधियाँ आ जाती हैं । नए विचारों एवं अवधारणाओं से छोटे बच्चों का परिचय खेलों व ऐसी परिचित स्थितियों से कराया जा सकता है , जो उन्हें मजेदार लगे तथा जिनसे उन्हें घबराहट या परेशानी न हो । यही चात प्राईमरी के बड़े बच्चों के लिए भी लागू होती है ।

बच्चे खेल – खेल में गणितीय आकारों के बारे में सीख सकते हैं । जब छोटे बच्चे चीजों को आपस में बांटते हैं वास्तव में वे एक – से – एक का मेल मिलाते हैं । जब वे गुटकों से खेलते हैं तो वे अलग – अलग आकारों से उपयोग कर रहे होते हैं । जब वे ‘ पाँच छोटे बंदर ‘ जैसा गाना गाते हैं तो वे संख्याओं के नाम सीखते हैं । बच्चों को इबारती खेलों में भी मजा आता है । वे आम तौर पर शब्दों के पैटर्न पकड़ने में तेज होते हैं । क्योंकि पैटर्न पहचानना गणितीय सोच का मूलभूत पहलू है , बच्चे अपनी भाषा विकसित करने के साथ – साथ वास्तव में गणित भी कर रहे होते हैं ।

आप कोई भी गणितीय अवधारणा सिखाने हेतु ढेरों खेल बना सकते हैं । ये खेल या तो पूरी कक्षा के साथ खेले जा सकते हैं , या छोटे समूहों में । खेल ऐसे भी बनाए जा सकते हैं जिनसे बच्चे सम्बन्धित गणितीय भाषा भी साथ ही सीख जाएं । यहाँ टीम में खेले जाने वाले कुछ खेलों के उदाहरण दिए जा रहे हैं । ( क ) एक टीम अपने सामने कुछ कंकड़ रख लेती है दूसरी टीम पहला खेल – उतने ही कंकड़ रखे , या दूसरा खेल – गिर्ने एवं बताएं कि वे कितने हैं , या तीसरा खेल -14 कंकड़ ( मान लीजिए ) करने के लिए जितने भी कंकड़ और चाहिए उतने रखें.या चौथा खेल -3 कंकड़ छोड़ कर बाकी उठा लें , आदि । जैसे – जैसे खेल आगे बढ़ता है आप उन्हें संख्याओं के नाम भी सिखा सकते हैं ।

( ख ) एक टीम दो पासे ( बिन्दु या संख्याओं वाले ) फेंके एवं कंकड़ों के ढेर में से उतने कंकड़ उठा लें जितना कि दोनों पासों की संख्याओं का जोड़ हो ( या अंतर हो , या गुणा हो ) । दूसरी टीम भी ऐसा करे । दो बोरियों के बाद जिसके पास भी अधिक कंकड़ होंगे वह जीत जाएगा । यहाँ भी , खेल के दौरान बच्चे ‘ छ : जोड़ दो बराबर आठ ‘ जैसी भाषा से ज्यादा परिचित हो सकते हैं ।

( ग ) कंकड़ों , पासों , टहनियों , कार्डों या मोतियों से आप ‘ स्थानीय मान ‘ सिखाने के लिए खेल बना सकते हैं । 10 कंकड़ों ( 10 के आधार के लिए ) को एक कार्ड या एक मोती के समान मान कर , अदला – बदली की जा सकती है एवं इसका लेखा – जोखा रखा जा सकता है । एक बार जब वे दहाइयों की पकड़ ठोस चीजों से बना लेते हैं तो उन्हें संख्यांकों का इस्तेमाल करने वाले खेलों से भी परिचित करवाया जा सकता है ।

उदाहरण के लिए , आप 10-10 कार्डों के दो समूह ले सकते हैं जिन पर 0 से 9 तक के संख्यांक लिखे हों । इन्हें बच्चों की दो टीमें इस्तेमाल करेंगी । बच्चे कार्डों को फेंट कर एवं उल्टे करके टेबल पर रख दें । फिर वे बारी – बारी से , एक बार में एक कार्ड चुनेंगे एवं उसे बोर्ड पर ‘ इकाई ‘ या ‘ दहाई ‘ के स्तम्भ में रखेंगे । एक कार्ड जहाँ रखा जा चुका है यहाँ से हटाया नहीं जा सकता । उद्देश्य सबसे बड़ी संख्या बनाना है । वे जो भी नम्बर बनाएं उसे जोर से कह दें । उदाहरण हेतु , यदि पहले समूह का संख्या 3 का कार्ड खुला एवं उसे उन्होंने दहाई के स्तम्भ में रखा , तो उन्हें जोर से 30 कहना चाहिए , वगैरह । यह खेल कार्डों की जगह दो पासों से भी खेला जा सकता है । नीचे हमने अटकलबाजी के कुछ खेलों के उदाहरण दिए हैं । इनसे बच्चों को अपने गणितीय सोच एवं भाषा का विकास करने के बहुत – से मौके मिलते हैं

( क ) एक खेल में कक्षा के सामने जानी पहचानी चीजों का एक ढेर रख दिया जाए । एक टीम या बच्चे ( आप जैसे भी खेल खिलाना चाहें ) से किसी एक चीज को चुनने व उसका नाम शिक्षक के कान में कह देने हेतु कहा जाए ) दूसरे बच्चे समूह बारी – बारी से चुनी हुई चीज का अन्दाज लगाएं जिसके लिए वे उसके माप , आकार या दूसरी चीजों के सापेक्ष वस्तु का स्थान जैसे संकेतों को आधार बनाएं । जैसे , यह अधिक लम्बी है , ज्यादा भारी है , सामने रखी है , यह गोल नहीं है , आदि – आदि ।

( ख ) आप अटकलबाजी से ऐसे खेलों के बारे में सोच सकते हैं जिनमें अन्दाज लगाने वाले कुछ ऐसे सवाल ही पूछ सकते हैं जिनके उत्तर ‘ हाँ ‘ या ‘ नहीं ‘ में ही हों । ऐसे खेल बच्चों को विशिष्ट सवालों से ( क्यों वह दरवाजा है ? किताब है ? ) अधिक व्यापक सवालों ( क्या उस पर बैठ सकते हैं ? क्या वह मेरे जितना बड़ा है ? क्या कमरे में एक से ज्यादा हैं ? ) की ओर बढ़ने का मौका देते हैं । इससे उत्तर तक पहुँचने हेतु जरूरी प्रश्नों की संख्या कम हो सकती है । जैसे , मान लीजिये कि चुनी हुई चीज 1 से 100 के मध्य की संख्या है । शुरू में , शायद बच्चे अलग – अलग संख्याएँ लेकर पूछे कि क्या वह 4 है , या 26 है , वगैरह । कुछ समय के बाद वे पूछना सीख जाएंगे कि ” क्या वह 4 से बड़ी है ? ” ” क्या वह सम संख्या है ? ” आदि । बाकी बच्चे भी इस तरीके को जल्दी पकड़ लेंगे । या , मान लीजिये , चुनी हुई वस्तु एक बेलनाकार डिब्बा है । तब प्रश्नों में गणित की शब्दावली आ जाएगी

जैसे – क्या वह गोलाकार है ? क्या वह किसी रेखा के प्रति सममित है ? क्या उसमें 4 कोण हैं ? ऐसे खेल बच्चों की व्यापकीकरण करने , विशिष्टीकरण करने , अन्दाज लगाने व पैटर्न पहचानने की क्षमताएँ विकसित करके उनके गणितीय सोच का विकास करते हैं । यानि कि , वे सब उनकी गणितीय सोच व तार्किक क्षमता बढ़ाते हैं । एवं बच्चों में गणित की समझ बढ़ाने के लिए सामूहिक नृत्य और खेल – कूद की गतिविधियों , वगैरह इस्तेमाल के बारे में आप क्या सोचते हैं ? अब आप ऐसे ही कुछ उदाहरण दीजिए । बहुत सारी अन्य मजेदार गतिविधियों का प्रयोग बच्चों को ज्यामिति की विभिन्न अवधारणाओं से परिचित कराने हेतु किया जा सकता है ।

जैसे , बच्चे सममिति के बारे में ‘ रंगोली ‘ के सममित पैटर्न कागज पर बना कर सीख सकते हैं । ओरीगेमी , यानि कागज मोड़ने की कला , के द्वारा भिन्न – भिन्न दो व तीन – आयामी आकारों से उनका परिचय कराया जा सकता है । सिखाते वक्त , हर कदम पर शिक्षक गणित की शब्दावली पर जोर दे सकती है जैसे , ‘ अब कागज को मोड़कर आधा करो ‘ , ‘ फिर मोड़कर इससे एक वर्ग बनाओ ‘ , ‘ जब तुम इस कोने को इस प्रकार से मोड़ोगे ( दिखाकर ) , यह एक त्रिभुज बन जाएगा ।

‘ टैनग्राम का इस्तेमाल भी इसी उद्देश्य के लिए किया जा सकता है ( क ) एक टैनग्राम , ( ख ) टैनग्राम से बने कुछ आकार अभी तक हमने ठोस से अमूर्त की ओर बढ़ना , ठोस विधि पर खूब समय लगाना एवं गणित पढ़ाने के लिए मजेदार गतिविधियों का इस्तेमाल करना – इन बातों के महत्त्व पर जोर दिया । सीखने का माहौल बनाने हेतु यह सब काफी नहीं है । अगले खंड में हम इसके कुछ और पहलुओं पर चर्चा करेंगे ।

When we do pre-class preparation in the course of going to maths class, many experiences like how to bring children to concepts, from content to them What activities will be carried out, what material will be displayed among them, what will be done for the active participation of the children, how will the new concept be presented and clarified among them, how will the children check whether they have learned or not, etc.

The above experiences are also presented in a systematic manner in the structure of teaching-learning process that is done by us. This systematic presentation of the learning process is called teaching method. How is our method of teaching and the way we present the lesson in the classroom? Here it depends not only on our teaching skills but also on the nature of the content, the way children learn, the resources available in the classroom and the nature of the content and keeping this in mind, we decide our teaching method. This is the reason that different methods are used to clarify different concepts in mathematics subject.

Constructivist Approach to Teaching Mathematics

The process of learning and teaching should not be dependent on the textbook alone, but the children should be given opportunities to do it themselves so that they can build their knowledge on their own, the textbook is only a medium.

Develop assessment methods that promote learning and provide feedback for curriculum development and planning. The role of the teacher is not that of the knower but that of the guide. The spirit of inquiry is encouraged. In mathematics, the emphasis is on finding patterns and encouraging generalization. Also assessing what, how much and how is being learned?

Constructivist approach means that by using the mental thinking power of the students, they solve the problems of teaching mathematics by working in an entertaining and creative way. In the beginning , it is enough that he understands this property only for small numbers with which he is already familiar . Why is he still dealing with huge numbers with which he may not be so familiar? One way to help the learner in question 2 is to use word-of-mouth questions that relate to their world. For example , if you are trying to teach a preschool child the meaning of ‘ two ‘ , a good approach would be to give him several questions like ‘ give me two pencils ‘ . While solving these types of questions, the child practices and gradually understands the meaning of ‘two’ completely. However, no textbook can begin with any one level that is right for every child. If teachers want them to build a solid foundation of mathematical thinking and abilities, it is important that they use instructional materials other than textbooks for preschool and primary school children. In fact, giving a curriculum based on activities in itself is not enough. It would be better to simultaneously use a workbook instead of a textbook, especially for young children. For a child to understand any concept, he should be given a sequence of learning experiences starting from concrete experiences and reaching to the abstract level. By keeping roughly this sequence, a few modifications can be made to it and at each step of the sequence you need to know how much the child has understood. In many games, many mathematical activities come on their own, for fun. You can create tons of games to teach any mathematical concept. These games can be played either with the whole class, or in small groups. Games can also be made in such a way that children can learn the related mathematical language at the same time. Here are some examples of team sports. (a) One team puts some pebbles in front of them, the second team puts the same number of pebbles in the first game, or the second game – falls and tells how many they are, or the third game – 14 pebbles (say) as many pebbles And keep as many as you want. After some time they will learn to ask “Is it greater than 4?” “Is it an even number?” etc. Other children will also catch this method quickly. Or, let’s say, the chosen object is a cylindrical box. Then the questions will come with mathematical terminology like – is it circular? Is it symmetric about any line? Does it have 4 angles? Such games develop the mathematical thinking of children by developing their abilities to generalise, characterize, guess and recognize patterns. That is, they all increase their mathematical thinking and logical ability. And what do you think about the use of group dance and sports activities, etc., to enhance the understanding of mathematics in children? Now give some such examples. Many other fun activities can be used to introduce children to different concepts of geometry. For example, children can learn about symmetry by drawing symmetrical patterns of ‘rangoli’ on paper.
